SAN DIEGO -- Wilmer Flores is wearing a protective boot on his twisted right ankle during the day, but should again be available to pinch hit in Thursday's series opener against the San Diego Padres, Terry Collins said.

Collins expects Flores to avoid the disabled list.

Flores injured the ankle running the bases Monday and completed the game, but has not since been in the starting lineup. Josh Satin will start a second straight game at third base Thursday. Flores pinch hit in the ninth and delivered a single to center field Wednesday, but he ran so gingerly to first base that Collins thought he might actually get thrown out.

"Did you see him run down to first? Are you comfortable with that?" Collins said about Flores' availability to start. "... I don't think he's ready to run the bases. I saw him come out of the batter's box. He told me he could pinch hit. I mean, I knew we were going to have to run. When I saw him come out of the batter's box, I thought they might throw him out at first."
