SAN DIEGO -- Hitless in his last 13 at-bats and batting .210 in August, rookie center fielder Juan Lagares will sit Friday night.

Terry Collins said an added motivation is getting another lefty bat, Mike Baxter, into the outfield against right-hander Ian Kennedy, a former 21-game winner.

Lagares spent the early afternoon having an extra batting practice session with hitting coach Dave Hudgens.

"He's been scuffling at the plate," Collins said. "Dave and he did some things on the field today. Dave's just trying to get him more calm. ... The more you play, make no mistake about it, the scouts that sit in the stands, they talk to each other. And people that haven't seen Juan play, or they see him for the first time, they try to gather as much information as they can. And they're starting to do some things on a consistent basis. And he's getting a little bit out front, so he's committing a little bit early."
