The Mets played the role of spoiler against the Washington Nationals over the weekend, at least until Sunday’s late-game breakdown. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:
Gee ties a record
Dillon Gee earned his fourth win against the Nationals this season in Friday’s game. He tied the Mets record for most wins in a season against that franchise, matching a mark he currently shares with Frank Viola (1991), Roberto Hernandez (all in relief in 2005) and Tom Glavine (2004).
More good stuff from Wheeler
Other than four fewer strikeouts, Zack Wheeler’s win on Saturday was a near-duplicate of his start against the Phillies earlier in the week. In each game, he threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits with one walk.
Wheeler threw strikes at a 70 percent rate, the second-best rate he’s posted in 14 career starts (74 percent against the Marlins on July 30). He threw 19 of 27 first-pitch strikes, matching his second best first-pitch strike rate (73 percent in that Marlins start).
He was again successful in getting lefties out, retiring nine of the 12 he faced. Lefties are 4-for-25 with one walk against him in the last two starts.
Elias noted that Wheeler became only the second rookie in the team's 52-year history to win five consecutive road decisions in one season. The other was Jerry Koosman in 1968.
Murphy Can’t Miss
After going 2-for-4 on Sunday Night, Daniel Murphy extended his multiple-hit hit streak to four straight games. He's halfway to the Mets record of eight straight, set by Steve Henderson in 1979. David Wright came closest to breaking the mark with a seven-game streak in 2011.
The Mets record for a multi-hit streak is eight games, set by Steve Henderson in 1979. David Wright came closest to breaking it with a seven-gamer in 2011.
Last at-bat heartbreak
Sunday’s loss was the 23rd of the season for the Mets in their opponents’ last at-bat. That is the most such losses in the major leagues.
Reader note of the week
Via my former Stats & Info colleague Puneet Nanda, Mets starting pitchers finished August with a 4.16 strikeout-to-walk rate, breaking the club record for a calendar month. The previous mark of 4.03 was set in July, 2001.
