ATLANTA -- Carlos Torres went from a shutout bid to being on the losing end in the span of three batters Tuesday night.
After taking a scoreless effort one out into the bottom of the seventh, Torres surrendered a solo homer to Evan Gattis, walked Dan Uggla and surrendered a two-run homer to Andrelton Simmons.
The final score: Braves 3, Mets 1.
Allowed to bat, Torres had struck out looking to strand runners on the corners in the top half of the seventh against Kris Medlen.
Terry Collins clearly had no interest in pinch hitting for the journeyman right-hander at that point, with the Mets leading 1-0. Torres had been at only 66 pitches through six innings, working on a four-hit shutout. And the bullpen had logged five innings on Monday night in relief of Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Torres' final line: 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 2 HR.
The performance came on the heels of Torres limiting the Philadelphia Phillies to one run on four hits and no walks in 6 2/3 innings on Thursday, in his first start stepping in for Matt Harvey.
Murph!: Newly named NL Player of the Week Daniel Murphy’s sixth-inning double plated Eric Young Jr. with the game's opening run. Young had tripled against Medlen on a ball poorly played on the track in left field by a retreating Gattis.
What's next: Team wins leader Dillon Gee (10-9, 3.63 ERA) opposes right-hander Kameron Loe (0-1, 10.13) at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, in Loe’s return to the majors. The ex-Ranger/Brewer fills in for Julio Teheran, who is getting skipped to conserve his innings count.
