Rice to undergo sports hernia surgery

Lefty reliever Scott Rice needs surgery for a sports hernia and will miss the remainder of the season. He will undergo the procedure next week.

Rice currently leads the majors with 73 relief appearances this season. He had pitched in the minors since 1999 until making this season's Opening Day roster.

Rice, 31, had a 4-5 record and 3.71 ERA this season. Lefties his .174 against him.
