NEW YORK -- Ruben Tejada will join the Mets as soon as Tuesday, a team official confirmed.

The wait is straightforward: By stalling until then, the Mets delay Tejada's free-agency eligibility from after the 2016 season until after the 2017 season.

That does not mean Tejada will be with the Mets four more seasons. But he has more value, even in a trade, if the Mets stall calling him up and delay free agency by a year.

Tejada, 23, hit .288 with two homers and 24 RBIs in 240 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Mets already have announced the call-ups of Greg Burke over the weekend as well as Mike Baxter, Aaron Harang and Juan Centeno for Monday's series opener against the Washington Nationals.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
