NEW YORK -- Zack Wheeler took a fatalistic approach to surrendering only one run in seven innings yet suffering the loss because of a lack of production at the plate from his teammates.

"That happens," Wheeler said Wednesday, after the Washington Nationals completed a 3-0 win at Citi Field.

Wheeler's seven innings matched his career high. He also went that distance twice in July, at San Francisco and at Miami.

The lone damage against Wheeler came on a sixth-inning solo homer by Ryan Zimmerman. Wheeler intended to bury a curveball in the dirt but missed on the pitch's location. Zimmerman has five homers in his past five games.

Wheeler had gone five straight starts without surrendering a long ball -- the second-longest streak by a Mets rookie in the past 25 years. Jae Weong Seo (2003) and Jeremy Hefner (2012) each went six games.

"I just made that one mistake to Zimmerman," Wheeler said. "As soon as I let it go, I knew it was going to be just a spinner right down the middle. He capitalized on it."

Wheeler did twice strand a pair of runners in scoring position -- in his first and final innings.

"I've been trying to do it since I've been up here," Wheeler said about wiggling free of jams. "I've been having to make pitches because I've been in some trouble."
