Shortstop Wilfredo Tovar took part in early batting practice Friday at Citizens Bank Park after joining the Mets. Tovar traveled to Philadelphia from his native Venezuela via Miami. He had been taking grounders and running with winter-ball club Magallanes since the Binghamton season ended. He labeled the late call-up a surprise. Terry Collins plans to give Tovar his first major league start Sunday.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
