PHILADELPHIA -- Wilfredo Tovar had spent two weeks after Double-A Binghamton's season ended in his native Venezuela.

So Tovar never did expect to be in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon, producing his first major league hit against Cliff Lee to drive in the tying run in the seventh inning in what became a 4-3 win against the Philadelphia Phillies.

"I was not expecting it, just being home and then all of a sudden getting the call," Tovar said through interpreter Pedro Lopez, his Double-A manager. "And now I'm in Philadelphia getting a hit like I did, and I'm just trying to make the most out of it."

Tovar had been retired on groundouts in each of his first two at-bats before the run-scoring single, which actually also plated the go-ahead run because of an error in left field handling the baseball.

"That first at-bat he was pitching me inside," Tovar said. "And then second the second at-bat he was basically pitching the same way. That third at-bat I was just looking for something in and I was fortunate that I got it and drove in that run."

Terry Collins said he had no intention to pinch hit for Tovar with two runners in scoring position in the seventh and the Mets trailing by a run with one out. (David Wright was off-limits after playing two straight days anyway.)

Tovar was not expecting to be lifted, either.

"Once I saw my name in the lineup it never crossed my mind," Tovar said.
