Matt Harvey may appear in the Arizona Fall League as a way to gauge whether he can avoid Tommy John surgery, Sandy Alderson told reporters Monday.
Harvey is trying rehab and a throwing program over the next six to eight weeks in the hope a surgical procedure, which would cost him all of 2014, will not be necessary.
Major leaguers frequently rehab with minor league teams during the regular season, but whether Harvey is eligible to rehab in the AFL is unclear. An AFL official could not immediately be reached to discuss Harvey's eligibility.
The Arizona Fall League opens play Oct. 8.
