Johan Santana is now a free agent.
The Mets officially made Johan Santana a free agent Friday for the first time in the southpaw's MLB career by declining his $25 million option for 2014. Santana instead will receive a $5.5 million buyout.
Santana underwent surgery on April 2 to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder. Agent Chris Leible said Santana has resumed throwing a baseball and expects to be ready for next season.
While not overly likely, Mets officials say they would consider bringing Santana back on a deal with a low base salary and incentives.
