NEW YORK -- Watch out, Daniel Murphy. You're getting an honor that often leads to your departure.

Murphy has been booked to play Santa Claus on Dec. 17 at Citi Field, at the Mets' annual holiday party for local schoolchildren.

For years, playing Santa Claus for the Mets was the last step before getting traded or suffering some serious injury. Just ask past Santas including Kris Benson, John Maine, Mike Cameron and Jeff Francoeur.

Last year, R.A. Dickey was traded days after attending the holiday party.

Zack Wheeler, by the way, will serve as Murphy's elf/sidekick.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
