At the deadline to add prospects to the 40-man roster to shield them from Rule 5 draft eligibility, the Mets added four pitchers -- right-handers Jacob deGrom, Jeff Walters and Erik Goeddel and left-hander Steven Matz.

The 40-man roster is now full, at 40.

DeGrom, 25, rose all the way from Class A St. Lucie to Triple-A Las Vegas this past season, posting a combined 7-7 record and 4.51 ERA in 26 starts. Although Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero get more attention, deGrom -- a ninth-round pick in 2010 out of Stetson -- should be a consideration to make the major league rotation at some point in 2014.

Walters, 26, posted 38 saves with Double-A Binghamton in 2013, which set single-season and B-Mets career saves records. He is a seventh-round pick in 2010 out of the University of Georgia.

Goeddel, an overslot pick in the 24th round out of UCLA in 2010, went 9-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 25 starts for Binghamton.

Matz, a product of Ward Melville High School on Long Island, may have been the most intriguing decision. He was the top pick by the Mets in the 2009 draft (second round, 72nd overall), but soon thereafter missed nearly two full seasons with a long recovery from Tommy John surgery. As a result, Matz only pitched at low-A Savannah this past season. He compiled a 5-6 record and 2.62 ERA in 21 starts.

The Mets did not add any position players. As a result, the prospects eligible for the Rule 5 draft for the first time will include upper-level outfielders Cory Vaughn and Darrell Ceciliani.

Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
