LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Sandy Alderson offered this reaction Sunday to Robinson Cano's 10-year, $240 million deal with the Seattle Mariners.

"Nothing should be surprising anymore," Alderson said. "Therefore I wasn't surprised, after a moment.

"But that kind of money has been spent before. The thing about baseball that is funny is that all 30 teams are on a continuum. And nobody is on the same point psychologically, competitively, financially at any point in time. So there's always somebody who is digging in their heels, and they're not going to do this or they're not going to do that, and they're going to get the first pick every year for three years. And there is somebody on the other end who is going crazy. It doesn't do any good to lament that. That's reality. You just have to deal with it."

Alderson had dined with Jay-Z and other Cano agents last month.
