LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Jeremy Hefner, who was one of five players non-tendered by the Mets on Dec. 2, is rejoining the organization on a minor-league contract.

That will allow the Mets to retain control of Hefner at a reduced salary while he rehabs from Tommy John surgery.

Hefner underwent the procedure on Aug. 28. So he potentially could be a September addition after rosters expand. The typical recovery time from Tommy John surgery is 12 months.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
