GM: Shopping contingent upon Ruben, Ike

Sandy Alderson still has at least some shopping remaining this winter. But the GM told ESPNNewYork.com that the amount of work he needs to undertake is dependent upon the roles Ruben Tejada and Ike Davis have with the club in 2014.

If Tejada is the starting shortstop and not pushed to a backup role, then the Mets still need to go out and get a backup middle infielder, the GM suggested. Currently, only minor-league free-agent signing Anthony Seratelli and Wilfredo Tovar have shortstop experience among players due to be in camp beyond Tejada.

And if Davis and Lucas Duda are on the roster, then the Mets would be less likely to go get one more backup outfielder, since the bench presumably would include Anthony Recker, Josh Satin, the backup middle infielder, Duda and the Eric Young Jr./Juan Lagares non-starter.

"We're still looking," Alderson said about the bench. "It depends on what happens in the middle infield as to whether we need someone else on the bench. And as for how things look in the outfield, we've got people who can provide us some bench help. But I'd say right now we continue to look at what's available and at what might be of value for us."

Alderson acknowledged he also remains in the market for a veteran bullpen arm via a major-league free-agent contract or trade. The current back end of the bullpen includes Bobby Parnell, who is returning from surgery to repair a herniated disk, as well as Vic Black.

"We're still looking," the GM said about bullpen help. "There's still a decent volume. Of course, that could come through free agency or trade. Let's see how that works out."

Finally, the Mets also hope to add a fifth-starter competitor -- "probably" on a minor-league contract -- to compete with Jenrry Mejia and the prospects in camp.

"We're looking at that possibility," Alderson said.

Here are ESPN's lists of available free-agent starting pitchers, free-agent relievers, infielders and outfielders.
