The Mets have signed left-hander John Lannan to a minor-league contract with a spring-training invite. Lannan, 29, will compete with Jenrry Mejia and prospects such as Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom for the fifth-starter role.

Lannan also would potentially give the Mets a second southpaw in the rotation, along with Jonathon Niese.

Lannan went 3-6 with a 5.33 ERA in 14 starts for the Philadelphia Phillies last season. He is a Long Beach, Long Island, native and Chaminade High product.
