Bobby Abreu, who has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, nearly chose the Mets instead, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

The lefty-hitting Abreu, 39, went unsigned last year and did not play in 2013.

He hit a combined .242 with three homers and 24 RBIs in 100 games with the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012.

"Bob Abreu was close to signing with the Mets, but still has good relations and a house in Philadelphia," Mets hitting coach Dave Hudgens, who is managing in Caracas this winter, told Venezuelan media.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
