PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jeremy Hefner, who underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 28, has been cleared by team doctors to begin tossing a baseball.

"Super short," Hefner said about the distance.

Hefner has yet to receive a precise throwing program.

Because Tommy John surgery has a typical 12-month recovery time, Hefner may be able to return to the majors in Sept. 1.
