Prospect Matz had surgery in October

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Left-handed pitching prospect Steven Matz had surgery in October to clean out a knee, the Long Island native acknowledged after icing it after Monday's workout.

Matz, 22, nonetheless posted a 2.62 ERA in 21 starts with low-A Savannah in 2013 before undergoing the patella procedure.

Added to the 40-man roster this offseason, Matz likely is to open 2014 at Class A St. Lucie.
