Reyes needs to get set

8/8/2010

Jose Reyes appeared on his game early Sunday. The leadoff man opened the first inning with a line drive to right field and hustled it into a double, narrowly ahead of a throw from Domonic Brown. Reyes then again motored around the bases, to score against Roy Halladay as Angel Pagan singled to center.

But Reyes also committed an error in a five-run third inning against R.A. Dickey. As a result, two of the runs were unearned as Philadelphia built a 6-2 lead.

Reyes now has 12 errors this season. His career high is 18, in 2005. Reyes also had a two-error game in Atlanta on this trip. And Jerry Manuel said he's noticed enough of a recent trend that he's asked infield coach Chip Hale about it. The conclusion: Reyes loses focus and doesn't set himself sometimes when the pitcher is set to deliver the ball.

“Pre-pitch preparation,” the manager labeled the issue. “Every now again he gets a little lax in that. As soon as he gets lax, it kind of bites him. He’s got to stay consistent with that. You’re going to make errors, but the one thing we want is preparation there. That’s the discussion ongoing with him at this time.”
