PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- For the first time since last July 30, Bobby Parnell faced batters in a game-like situation.
Parnell last pitched in a game last summer, before undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck. He was further slowed this spring training by a quadriceps issue.
"I was happy with it," Parnell said. "It's still way early in the spring. There's plenty of time to get it going."
Parnell, typically a flamethrower, touched 89 mph Thursday.
"Obviously the last week or so, my arm will be stronger, the routine will be better. And, I think, as that comes, the speed gets there. I've said it 100 times -- I don't really worry about velocity. I felt strong. The ball was moving well. I got some early swings."
Parnell said he is ready for Grapefruit League action.
"I feel like I'm ready to go," he said. "I think the only reason for this one is they wanted to keep me at home and make sure everything was all right."
