Mejia still looks like odd-man out

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Despite a solid spring training, Jenrry Mejia still looks likely to end up at Triple-A Las Vegas to open the season. That is, assuming Jonathon Niese's elbow issue is minimal and the southpaw starts a major-league game no later than April 6.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is starting Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Detroit Tigers, is projected to win the competition against John Lannan and Mejia for the fifth starter's role.

And the bullpen appears reasonably set as well barring injury, with the likely contingent including Bobby Parnell, Vic Black, Jose Valverde, Carlos Torres, Jeurys Familia, Scott Rice and Lannan.

Mets insiders have told ESPNNewYork.com they would huddle late in spring training to decide once and for all if Mejia is a starter or reliever, provided he is not in the big-league rotation to open the season. Team officials no longer want to shuttle Mejia between starting and relieving.
