PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Monday will be a major step in proving Jonathon Niese is healthy.

Niese is scheduled to throw a bullpen session. It will come a week after his visit to the Hospital for Special Surgery, during which he received a cortisone injection in his pitching elbow to address inflammation.

The hope is that Niese makes minor-league starts Thursday as well as five days later and comes off the disabled list to face the Cincinnati Reds on April 6 at Citi Field.

That is the first date the Mets need a fifth starter.
