PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Left-hander John Lannan officially is on the Opening Day roster ... as a reliever.

Lannan, originally signed on a minor-league contract, was added to the 40-man roster Thursday as the Mets prepared to break camp and depart for Montreal for a pair of exhibition games against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Lannan began the transition to relief this week. All 148 of his career major-league appearances have been as a starting pitcher. He had a 4.91 Grapefruit League ERA.

The Mets' bullpen is due to be composed of closer Bobby Parnell, setup man Jose Valverde, primary lefty Scott Rice, Jeurys Familia, Gonzalez Germen, Carlos Torres and Lannan.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
