Collins chalked up the Culberson homer to playing at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
“Right now, yeah, Kyle’s the closer,” Collins said before Sunday’s series finale. “We’re playing in Colorado, at Coors Field. For years and years, the one thing that made these [Rockies] guys such a good team, they’re up last. And they know it. And they know what they can do with that last at-bat. And I’ve lost a lot of games here in the last inning.
“My first year as a manager in the big leagues, with Houston, when this stadium opened, I called down to the bullpen many times and nobody answered the phone,” the manager deadpanned. “That tells you exactly how it’s like to pitch here.”
Truth be told, Collins does not have great alternatives currently on his big-league staff.
Daisuke Matsuzaka, currently dealing with a calf issue anyway, is one option.
“Certainly, as I said 10 days ago, he’s got to be one of our options as a guy we can close with, but it won’t be today,” Collins said.
