Mejia in pen 'always in the conversation'

DENVER -- The Mets intend to have Jenrry Mejia start Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field, the next time his turn comes up in the rotation.

Still, Terry Collins said the starter-versus-reliever debate with Mejia will continue.

Mejia has wilted the third time through the order this season, even though Collins assigned Saturday’s eight-run meltdown in the fifth against the Colorado Rockies to plenty of bad luck.

Opposing batters are hitting .160 the first time they face Mejia in a game, .239 the second time and .438 the third time through the order.

Asked if that statistic reopens a question of relief being the suitable role, Collins said: “Especially when you have starts where they are five innings, 4 2/3, five innings, it’s always in the conversation,” Collins said.

Mejia is averaging about 5 1/3 innings a start.

Collins said he does not believe fatigue is a factor. Instead, the manager believes it is more about managing a game -- changing pitch sequences and pitch selection as the game progresses.

“If there’s one guy who is in shape in that room, it’s Jenrry Mejia,” Collins said. “I’ll tell you what, he is the most conditioned pitcher -- and no disrespect to the other guys -- of anybody on that staff. He runs and runs.”

Mejia does not want to work in relief. He previously has relayed to the Mets that he would prefer being a Triple-A starter to relieving in the big leagues.
