MIAMI -- One silver lining to a miserable series for the Mets: Zack Wheeler tossed six scoreless innings Wednesday to rebound from a career-high seven runs allowed (six earned) in his previous start at Colorado.

Wheeler breezed into the middle innings, but walked four of the final seven batters he faced and had to depart with his pitch count at 104.

After walking Christian Yelich and Derek Dietrich to open the sixth, Wheeler broke Giancarlo Stanton's bat inducing a double play and eventually escaped that inning unscathed to complete his outing. He allowed two hits but walked five in his six scoreless innings.

"I made the pitch when I had to," Wheeler said after getting a no-decision in the 1-0 loss to the Marlins. "Today was a good overall day for me, except for the walks. I had a good pitch count going through the innings. I just started throwing balls. It killed my pitch count and I had to come out earlier than I expected to."

Said Terry Collins: "Obviously he started to run out of gas there. He walked -- what -- four of the last six guys he faced or seven guys he faced? But he pitched a very good game. He made a great pitch on [Stanton] after falling behind him. I really thought it helped him get through the game. He's got the stuff to be really, really good here."
