Germen 'close' to return to majors

SAN FRANCISCO -- Gonzalez Germen is "close" to rejoining the Mets, Terry Collins said Sunday.

Germen has been on the disabled list since May 6 because of a virus and abscess.

The 26-year-old reliever has made four appearances with Class A St. Lucie since Monday, including working back-to-back Friday and Saturday.

Collins indicated Germen would join the Mets when he is activated from the disabled list and not simultaneously be optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. That presumably means Dana Eveland, the third lefty in the bullpen, is vulnerable.

"Germen pitched back-to-back games for the first time last night," Sandy Alderson told ESPNNewYork.com. "We are assessing whether a Las Vegas stint will be necessary. We'll know more later today."
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
