NEW YORK -- Scott Rice, who had a banner rookie season last year after spending 14 seasons in the minors, is headed back to Triple-A.

Rice was demoted to Las Vegas after Tuesday's 6-2 win against the Milwaukee Brewers, leaving Josh Edgin and Dana Eveland as the left-handers in the bullpen.

Gonzalez Germen will be activated from the disabled list, where he had been since May 6 with a virus and abscess.

Rice was 1-2 with a 5.93 ERA in 32 relief appearances totaling 13 2/3 innings. That was perhaps a residual effect of last season's 73 appearances through Sept. 3, after which he required dual sports-hernia surgeries.

Lefty batters hit .174 against Rice last season. This season they were hitting .262.
