PITTSBURGH -- X-rays of Anthony Recker's right hand, which was struck with a foul tip while catching during Saturday's game, were negative. Still, the backup catcher has significant swelling at the base of the thumb a day after absorbing the blow.
"He's going to be pretty sore today," Terry Collins said pregame Sunday. "That baby was nasty. When he came off the field, it was already an inch high, the swelling."
No. 1 catcher Travis d'Arnaud starts Sunday anyway. Asked if Recker would be available, Collins said: "I don't know. He finished the game, so I'm sure if we had to we've got him."
