SAN DIEGO -- Dillon Gee surrendered a pair of solo homers after falling behind in the count, on a 3-1 offering to Yasmani Grandal and 2-0 offering to Will Venable. Afterward, Gee offered no excuses.

"It was just a bad night," said Gee, who surrendered four runs in five innings in the Mets' 6-0 loss to the San Diego Padres on Saturday. "I wasn't locating there for a while, pitching behind to guys. And it makes it tough when I do that.

"On the positive side, I felt strong the last six hitters, or whatever it was. So hopefully I can carry that into my next start."

Gee had surrendered only one homer in his previous six starts. He had a three-game winning streak snapped despite posting a season-high eight strikeouts. His ERA climbed to 2.92.

Gee (4-2) had returned from the disabled list on the Wednesday before the All-Star break, in the slot formerly held by Jonathon Niese. So this start came a full day 10 days after his last outing. Gee said that was not a material factor.

"I felt good every day leading up to this and just kind of lost it there for a while," Gee said. "I definitely want to try to get deeper into games. There's really no excuse for it. It's just one of those nights where I lost it there for a while, couldn't locate and couldn't repeat the mechanics."

Gee retired the final six batters he faced after Venable's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth. But with the Mets trailing 4-0, Terry Collins felt compelled to pinch hit for Gee in the top of the sixth.

"I never want to come out of the game," Gee said. "Winning or losing, I just want to get deep and save the bullpen. I definitely felt like I was getting on a roll there."
