NEW YORK -- Daisuke Matsuzaka's role upon returning to the majors will depend upon Jacob deGrom's health and Rafael Montero's performance in the interim, Terry Collins said.

Matsuzaka, on the DL with elbow inflammation, makes another rehab start Saturday, in Game 1 of a doubleheader for Double-A Binghamton at Reading.

Collins said whether the Mets ultimately bring Matsuzaka back as a starter is partly based on whether Jacob deGrom returns from the DL on time.

DeGrom is scheduled to throw for the first time on Saturday since landing on the DL with rotator cuff tendinitis. If all goes according to plan, he would miss only one more rotation turn, then pitch next Saturday at Dodger Stadium.

“Is he going to come off on time?” Collins said. “History would say, yeah, probably due to the issue he had. But he may not.”

If deGrom is not ready, and Montero falls flat again filling in on Sunday for deGrom against the Cubs, Collins can see Matsuzaka returning as a starting pitcher.

“I have no idea where it’s going to be,” Collins confessed about Matsuzaka’s role.
