NEW YORK -- The Reading Phillies proved no challenge for Daisuke Matsuzaka in a rehab start on Saturday afternoon.
Matsuzaka, on the DL with right elbow inflammation, limited Philadelphia's Double-A club to one run and three hits and did not issue a walk in six innings while pitching for the Binghamton Mets. Matsuzaka tossed 69 pitches (43 strikes). He struck out three batters.
It was Matsuzaka's second rehab start. He pitched five days earlier for Class A St. Lucie, logging three innings.
The Mets are stretching Matsuzaka out for a potential starting role in the majors. But that does not seem like it will be needed assuming Jacob deGrom returns as planned from the DL next Saturday at Dodger Stadium -- that is, unless Bartolo Colon gets traded.
