NEW YORK -- Chicago Cubs right-hander Dan Straily hit an unfortunate bull’s-eye on a sixth-inning fastball to David Wright.

Straily’s 88 mph offering struck Wright directly in the spot in the left shoulder that has nagged the captain since before the All-Star break. Trainer Ray Ramirez advised Terry Collins to pull Wright after that half-inning.

Collins, who had been planning to give Wright a day off soon anyway, indicated Wright will sit Sunday … and potentially beyond that if the shoulder continues to nag him. Eric Campbell replaced Wright at third base on Saturday.

“It just sucks that out of my whole back, it had to be that one area,” Wright said. “It shouldn’t be anything. It’s just bruised up and sore and a little stiff. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow.”

Wright walked a tightrope, acknowledging the shoulder already had been injured but then insisting it had not been an issue.

“As I’ve said a million times, if I’m in the lineup, physically I’m good to go,” Wright said. “… It just got me in a spot that’s bothersome. They thought it was best to give it a little bit of a rest. It’s, more than anything, just unlucky with the spot that it got me in.”

Wright said he was unconcerned.

“It’s part of the game,” he said. “I just wish it had been in a different spot.”

As for the day off, Wright added: “I’m not sure if that’s going to be my choice, but we’ll see how it feels tomorrow morning. I think that for the time being they want me to ice it, kind of rest it and see how it does with a night’s rest.”
