No room for Daisuke Matsuzaka

8/17/2014

NEW YORK -- So why is Daisuke Matsuzaka remaining on a rehab assignment after tossing six innings for the Binghamton Mets on Saturday and surrendering one run and three hits in a 69-pitch effort?

Essentially, with Jacob deGrom expected to return from the DL next weekend and bullpen arms including Buddy Carlyle performing well, there's no room for Matsuzaka right now on the major league roster.

So Matsuzaka is due to make at least one more rehab start before the Mets consider activating him. Manager Terry Collins expects that start to include about 85 pitches and to be for the Brooklyn Cyclones.

Matsuzaka would have to make another rehab start beyond that if the Mets want to stall his return all the way until rosters expand on Sept. 1.

A team official said Matsuzaka was not being stretched out as a starter because there is some viable trade for Bartolo Colon that may be consummated soon. Also, if the Mets did use a six-man rotation down the stretch, it would be preferable to use a young pitcher in that extra slot, not Matsuzaka.
