Abreu expected to return in September

8/17/2014

NEW YORK -- Bobby Abreu, who re-signed with the Mets on a minor-league deal Friday, four days after officially getting released, is likely to return to the major league club in September, according to a team official. It is unclear whether that will occur at the beginning of the month, when rosters first expand, or after Triple-A Las Vegas' postseason has ended.

Why did the Mets re-sign the 40-year-old Abreu?

"Whenever we sign a veteran player to a minor-league deal, we think about the impact he may or may not have on younger players," team vice president Paul DePodesta said. "For instance, that was a big reason for us bringing Buddy Carlyle into minor-league camp. Likewise, we certainly believed Bobby could have a positive influence in addition to his on-field performance."

Abreu has expressed interest in being a hitting coach after his playing days are over.

"As far as I know, there haven't been promises made about the future, playing or otherwise, but we're always on the lookout for guys who can continue to have an impact in uniform beyond their playing days," DePodesta said. "Val Pascucci, for one, has been fantastic for us this year [as hitting coach] in Savannah."

Abreu was hitless in his final 22 at-bats as a pinch hitter and 2-for-31 during the season in that role. Overall, he hit .238 with one home run and 14 RBIs in 122 at-bats with the Mets.
