NEW YORK -- The Mets' Gulf Coast League game against the Nationals in Viera, Fla., was halted in the fourth inning after a serious collision at second base left the baserunner, Mets farmhand Manuel Hilario, unconscious, according to observers.

Hilario, a 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic, was taken away by helicopter.

"He was unconscious for several minutes and then went into a seizure. He didn't look good at all. He had no idea where he was," said Moose Winningham, the brother of GCL Mets first baseman Dash Winningham, whose parents were present at the game. "... Apparently he wasn't moving his legs after the collision too. Very serious."

Mets VP Paul DePodesta said he could not yet share details.

"He's at the hospital, and they're running further tests on him," DePodesta said.

UPDATE: The Mets say Hilario is in "good spirits" and could be discharged from the hospital Saturday.

The team's full statement read: "In the fourth inning of today's Gulf Coast League game, first baseman Manuel Hilario slid into second base (feet first), colliding with the Nationals shortstop. He took a knee to the head and immediately began to experience seizures and remained unresponsive. After treatment on the field he was airlifted to an area hospital via helicopter. At the hospital he was administered a CT scan, which appears to be normal. He is talkative, in good spirits and could be discharged tomorrow."
