September could be meaningful for Wright

NEW YORK -- The dream of 90 wins faded early. The hope of finishing with a winning record is fading now.

The New York Mets aren't going to play meaningful games in September, at least not in the usual sense of the term. It still could be a meaningful month for some of the younger Mets.

And, perhaps, for one of the older ones.

David Wright returns to the Mets lineup for Thursday night's game against the Atlanta Braves, playing for the first time since he left Sunday's game with neck spasms. Wright continues to deal with a sore left shoulder, but he has said he wants to keep playing.

His manager agrees. Terry Collins said Thursday that he thinks September could be important for the Mets captain.

"A lot of it is leaving here feeling good about yourself," Collins said. "He's had a very tough year, and un-David-like year. I think if he finishes strong, it would be a real positive thing for him."

Wright was walking around with a smile Thursday, happy that his neck feels better and happy to be playing. He has had a difficult year, with a .692 OPS that would be the worst of his 11-year career, and with just eight home runs in 489 at-bats (and none in 143 at-bats since July 11).

He's 31 years old. He'll be 32 before next season begins. He's signed through 2020, and he and the Mets will both hope that this is just a bad season, and not a sign of decline.

A good September could help prove to them, and to everyone else, that 2015 could be better.

Murphy, Black ailing: Collins said that second baseman Daniel Murphy will have his sore calf re-examined, because even after several days of complete rest he wasn't showing improvement. Also, reliever Vic Black had an injection to deal with the herniated disk in his neck.

While the Mets didn't make an immediate roster move, it seemed very possible that either or both could go on the disabled list.
