Ike Davis’ rookie season is back on track. Davis delivered a three-run homer off Yunesky Maya in the first inning for the first baseman’s third long ball in four games. Davis, who now has 18 homers, is hitting .373 (22-for-59) with 17 walks in his past 18 games.
As a result, Davis’ average has climbed back to .258.
“It’s good to see him getting back hot again, because the first thing we thought was, ‘The season is too long, fatigue is setting in, he might not get it back,’” Jerry Manuel said after Tuesday’s 4-1 win against the Nationals. “Boy, he’s shot some balls out of the park these last two series and has been impressive.”
The difference?
“He first drew the walks,” Manuel said. “And then he decided to say, ‘If you’re going to pitch me that way [away], I’m going to hit them that way.’ What that has allowed him to do is that when he goes the other way, it has made him get on his legs, rather than get off his legs and just flick it over there.”
Said Davis: “Every team is kind of different. Like Arizona, all they did was throw fastballs in. And then you faced three other teams that would never do that. So [the Diamondbacks] caught me kind of leaning out and I couldn’t catch up to the fastballs in. Every organization has their own game plan on you. You’ve got to make adjustments every team you play.”
