Valdes still gets Saturday
By Adam Rubin
The Mets used seven relief pitchers in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader, matching a franchise record. It was everyone available in the bullpen with one exception: Oliver Perez.
Alas, though, Jerry Manuel was not holding Perez back for Saturday's start against the Washington Nationals.
Despite being used to record five outs in Game 1 Wednesday, Manuel confirmed Raul Valdes still will be capable of making the spot start on Saturday. Valdes threw 31 pitches on what is normally the bullpen-session day for a regular member of the rotation.
Pat Misch starts Friday against the Nats, while Mike Pelfrey gets Sunday.
Originally, it was supposed to be Misch, Mike Pelfrey and Jon Niese. But Monday's rainout against the Milwaukee Brewers pushed Pelfrey to Tuesday and Niese to Wednesday, which created a vacancy for Saturday while moving Pelfrey to Sunday and prompting Niese to lose a start.
Perez last appeared in a game on Sept. 6.
