Cuba-born pitchers square off Saturday
By Adam Rubin
When Mets left-hander Raul Valdes opposes Nationals right-hander Yunesky Maya on Saturday, history will not be made. After all, Cuban-born pitchers opposed each other plenty of times in the 1960s.
Still, the matchup in Game No. 161 between Valdes and Maya will mark the first time in more than seven years that two Cuban-born pitchers started opposite each other in a major league game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
The last meeting: May 22, 2003, when Montreal's Livan Hernandez opposed Florida's Michael Tejera. Hernandez, an ex-Met, also is a current member of the Nationals.
