Mets ink catcher Chavez

The Mets have signed Raul Chavez to provide catching depth with Dusty Ryan and Mike Nickeas behind Josh Thole and Ronny Paulino. Chavez signed a minor league deal and received a spring-training invite.

Here are details about Chavez's career directly from the Mets:

Chavez, 37, spent last season in the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization, playing 55 games for Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League.  He hit .210 (42-200) with 18 runs, 13 doubles, three home runs and 24 RBI.

The 5-11, 225-pounder made his major league debut in 1996 with the Montreal Expos.  He went on to play for the Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Blue Jays.  He last appeared in a big league game in 2009 with Toronto, hitting .258 (41-159) in 51 games.

The native of Valencia, Venezuela,is a career .231 (157-680) hitter with seven home runs and 65 RBI in 263 games.
