Outfielder Scott Hairston is joining the Mets on a minor league deal, an organization source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com. The righty-hitting Hairston and lefty-hitting Willie Harris very well could serve as the Mets' backup outfielders. Both making the team might severely hurt Nick Evans' chances.

Here is a portion of his 2010 media guide bio, directly from the San Diego Padres media guide:

Scott Alexander Hairston…a 1999 graduate of Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson, Ariz., before attending Central Arizona Junior College in Coolidge…tabbed by Baseball America as the 2001 preseason Player of the Year in junior college baseball…won the Arizona Junior College triple crown that season, batting .503 with 18 homers and 77 RBI…helped the semi-professional Liberal (KS) BeeJays to the 2000 National Baseball Congress World Series title… signed originally by Diamondbacks scout Steve Kmetco…fifth member of his family to play Major League Baseball…Hairston family joins the Boones and Bells as MLB’s only three-generation families…grandfather Sam played for the White Sox (1951), uncle John played for the Cubs (1969) and father Jerry played for the White Sox and Pirates (1973-89)…Sam Hairston played for the Negro American League’s Birmingham Black Barons and Indianapolis Clowns, later becoming the first African American to play for the White Sox…his brother, Jerry, also plays for the Padres.
