Control issues doom O'Connor
By Ian Begley
Terry Collins mentioned Mike O'Connor by name when talking about his bullpen's lack of execution of late.
He said before Wednesday's game that O'Connor just wasn’t making his pitches in recent appearances.
A few hours later, the Mets optioned O'Connor to Triple-A Buffalo.
According to ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin, reliever Manny Acosta is expected to fill O'Connor's roster spot.
Acosta is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in 19 appearances in Triple-A Buffalo.
O'Connor went 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in nine appearances with the Mets. Admittedly, the left-hander struggled to throw strikes in the past week. He surmised that his lack of control was the primary reason the Mets sent him down.
"The last week I hadn't been throwing enough strikes, I know that," O'Connor said.
He fully expects another shot to pitch with the big club at some point in 2011.
"I'm going to go out and pitch and do everything I can to get back," O'Connor said.
