Nickeas expected to join Mets
By Adam Rubin
With Scott Hairston headed to the disabled list, Mike Nickeas is expected to join the Mets as a third catcher, at least freeing Ronny Paulino to pinch-hit on days he does not start.
Nickeas, who was expected to be a September call-up anyway, is hitting .217 (5-for-23) at the major league level this season.
The other roster vacancy may be filled by 40-year-old Miguel Batista in coming days, although there is no guarantee. Regardless, Batista, Pat Misch and Chris Schwinden are candidates for two starts during the Marlins series next week necessitated by a doubleheader and Jon Niese landing on the DL.
