Report: Padres hire Omar Minaya
By Mike Mazzeo
The Padres have hired former Mets GM Omar Minaya. An official announcement will come Friday afternoon, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
Although Minaya's official title is unknown at this point, it is expected to be in a scouting/advisory capacity, Crasnick tweeted.
SI.com first reported the hire.
Minaya had interviewed for the Angels GM vacancy, but the Los Angeles organization elected to hire Jerry Dipoto instead.
Several other teams had expressed interest in bringing in Minaya.
The 53-year-old Queens native had served as the GM of the Montreal Expos prior to moving on to New York.
Whatever salary Minaya gets from the Padres will be deducted from the roughly $1.1 million the Mets still owe their former GM in 2012, a source told ESPN NewYork.com's Adam Rubin.
Minaya will work under Padres GM Josh Byrnes. Byrnes was a finalist for the Mets GM, ultimately losing out to Sandy Alderson.
