Jon Niese, who strained his right hamstring in Miami on May 16, indicated he's ready to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday to face the Marlins. Niese made one rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo and reported feeling fine. He allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings against Syracuse, but noted he wasn't hit very hard.

"It felt perfect. There's no problem," Niese said. "... I faced one guy -- a gnat, if you will -- he just kept bunting on me, bunting for a hit. He put the ball in a perfect spot. A credit to him, he got on base all three times. It was three bunt singles and a soft ground ball that got through the 5/6 hole."

Niese's activated allows Fernando Nieve to return to the bullpen. It also creates an interesting roster issue. The Mets would like Oliver Perez to go to the minors, but he has to accept. One teammate said he heard Perez's "knee's messed up" -- perhaps laying the groundwork for a DL stint instead that saves facve.

Meanwhile, asked if he needed to be placed on the DL, Niese said: "I probably could have got by without it, but it was probably for the best -- the best for me and the team -- just because rest is always helpful, especially with what I had with lingering soreness."
