Hairston pronounces workout a success

By Adam Rubin

Scott Hairston's labeled his first major workout since straining a left oblique muscle a success. Hairston did not swing a bat, but he did other pregame drills with teammates.

"He went out, jogged around, threw," Terry Collins said. "He did not swing today, but it's another step forward. Maybe by the weekend he starts swinging enough to where he can take batting practice."

Collins noted Hairston likely would need less time to prepare for the season than David Wright.

"Scott is in a little bit different situation. We want to use him, but his benefit mainly is to come off that bench and get a hit," Collins said. "He's a dangerous guy coming off that bench. So starting next week, if he can get in there, I can get him at-bats every day in the minor league camp and get him enough at-bats where he might be ready to help us."
