Sources: Francisco, Torres ready
By Adam Rubin
Frank Francisco and Andres Torres are expected to avoid the DL to open the season, team sources said.
Francisco had an MRI of his left knee Monday.
Torres' availability was affirmed with Vinny Rottino being informed he is headed to Triple-A Buffalo. The Mets also briefly held back Kirk Nieuwenhuis in St. Lucie before clearing him to travel to Buffalo on Monday.
The lone seemingly unresolved issue is Tim Byrdak, who is due to pitch in another minor league game today. Daniel Herrera is in a holding pattern as a contingency. Byrdak, if placed on the DL, would be required to miss only four games.
